About the event

COLLABORATING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT: A 2 PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP with KATE GORRINGE-SMITH & BRONWYN REES

Kate will take you through the process of making eco-prints on paper using foraged and found plant matter, and Bronwyn will reveal the process of turning a drawing on acetate into a drypoint etching. The first day will start with a site visit to a local migratory shorebird habitat for plein air drawing on acetate plates and foraging for plant material for eco-printing. We then return to the studio to make our eco prints and work on our etchings. On day two we will reveal our ecoprints and continue to work on, and print, our etchings.

Day 1

·        a site visit to local migratory shorebird habitat for plein air drawing on acetate plates and foraging for plant material for eco-printing on paper

·        creating two different kinds of bundles for eco-printing on paper, one to steam and one to boil

·        working on the etchings

 Day 2

·        Unbundling eco-prints

·         working on our etchings and printing them, maybe onto our ecoprints

Eco-printing is the process of tightly bundling plant material with paper and steaming or boiling to transfer natural dyes from the plant matter to the paper. Every ecoprint is different and tells a story of the artist and their surrounding environment.

Drypoint etching is an intaglio process that is chemical-free, as the artist marks directly onto the plate, allowing considerable spontaneity.

Bronwyn Rees

My first introduction to the amazing landscape of South West Victoria was when I did a residency in Portland in 2016.

Then I visited the area with Kate Gorringe Smith in 2018, which was my introduction to the wonderful world of shorebirds and their habitat.

I have since made work based on the area, my book “Woman of the Coorong” with Richard Sullivan, examining indigenous artist’s work Yvonne Koolmatrie and her basket weaving connection to this area.
